RCTBT Director Dr. SIU Sai Yau awarded RGC Faculty Development Scheme 2026/27 grant for Buddhist Translation Thought in Medieval China

RCTBT Director Awarded HK$395,700 under the RGC Faculty Development Scheme for "Buddhist Translation Thought in Medieval China"

We are delighted to announce that Dr. SIU Sai Yau, Director of the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT), has been awarded a research grant under the Faculty Development Scheme (FDS) of the Research Grants Council (RGC) Competitive Research Funding Schemes for the Local Self-financing Degree Sector 2026/27.

The three-year project will investigate the development of Buddhist translation thought in medieval China, examining how monk translators, scholars, and cataloguers reflected on, debated, and theorised the translation of Buddhist scriptures. It builds on Dr. Siu's earlier RGC-funded research (UGC/FDS14/H20/19) and his recent work on medieval Chinese translation discourse, including his chapter on Sengyou's approach to pseudotranslation in the UCL Press volume Translation Studies before 'Translation Studies'.

This competitive award reflects the RGC's continued recognition of the Centre's research at the intersection of Translation Studies and Buddhist Studies. We extend our sincere gratitude to the RGC and to HSUHK for their support.

RCTBT Launches "SITAJI" (寺塔記・唐長安佛寺數位圖志): A Digital Gazetteer of Buddhist Monasteries and Ward Society in Tang Chang'an

The Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT) is delighted to announce the launch of "SITAJI" (寺塔記・唐長安佛寺數位圖志), a Digital Gazetteer of Buddhist Monasteries and Ward Society based on Duan Chengshi's (段成式) Tang Dynasty work Sita ji (《寺塔記》, CBETA T2093).

The platform allows users to explore eleven Buddhist monasteries of Tang Chang'an together with ward gates, residences, commercial life, wells, and everyday figures of the capital's ward society. Key features include an interactive city ward map (城坊圖) with day and night views, a first-person POV exploration mode that lets users walk through the streets of Tang Chang'an, and thematic browsing across stūpas, murals, sūtra translation, and social history.

Textual content is presented in Classical Chinese, vernacular Chinese, and English, enriched with annotations on history, art, and material culture, alongside historical-geographical research notes. Supported by the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme (冼為堅中華文化拓展計劃), SITAJI exemplifies the Centre's commitment to Digital Humanities and Buddhist Studies. RCTBT Launches the "Xuanzang Translation Atlas" (玄奘譯行錄): A Bilingual Platform on Buddhist Translation History and Spatial Humanities

The Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT) is pleased to announce the launch of the "Xuanzang Translation Atlas" (玄奘譯行錄), a bilingual scholarly platform on Buddhist translation history and spatial humanities, built upon The Biography of the Tripiṭaka Master of the Great Ci'en Monastery of the Great Tang (《大唐大慈恩寺三藏法師傳》, T2053).

The platform presents a critical itinerary of 36 route records tracing Xuanzang's trans-Asian journey—outbound travel, pilgrimage in India, return to China, and his later translation career—visualized on an interactive globe with route legs and modern geographic references. A dedicated "Translation History" section reconstructs the imperially supported Tang translation bureaux, detailing the collaborative roles of chief translator, doctrinal verifiers, stylists, philologists, Sanskrit verifiers, scribes, and court reviewers, together with Xuanzang's major translations such as the Yogācārabhūmi (100 fascicles) and the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra (600 fascicles). An interactive knowledge network further connects people, monasteries, texts, and institutions.

Distinctively, the platform separates primary textual evidence from editorial reconstruction and modern geographic reference, and offers open research data in JSON-LD, GeoJSON, CSV, and JSON formats with clear attribution requirements. RCTBT and the Centre for Humanistic Buddhism Launch "Digital Humanities × Buddhism" Platform

On 30 June 2026, the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT), in collaboration with the Centre for Humanistic Buddhism at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), launched a new online platform dedicated to Digital Humanities and Buddhist Studies: https://www.dhbuddhism.tech/.

The platform brings together the two Centres' expertise in Buddhist scholarship and digital innovation, showcasing how computational methods—including artificial intelligence, interactive visualization, 3D modelling, and digital text analysis—can transform the study, translation, and dissemination of Buddhist texts and Humanistic Buddhism in the contemporary world.

This joint initiative marks a significant milestone in cross-centre collaboration at HSUHK, positioning the University at the forefront of Digital Humanities research in Buddhist Studies. We warmly invite scholars, students, and members of the public to visit and explore the platform.

RCTBT Honorary Scholars to Speak at HSUHK

On 9 June 2026, the RCTBT's Honorary Professor Venerable Professor K.L. Dhammajoti (法光法師/教授), together with Honorary Advisors Dr. Stephen Suen (孫漢明博士) and Dr. Eliza Fok (霍何綺華博士), will deliver academic lectures on Buddhism at HSUHK. The event is jointly presented by the University of Kelaniya, Samanta (行舍), and the Buddhist Lodge of Laity (香港居士林), and is conducted in English with bilingual Chinese-English slides.

The evening session (7:00–9:30 PM) features leading international Buddhist scholars: Venerable Professor K.L. Dhammajoti, a renowned authority on Abhidharma thought, and Professor Wasantha Priyadarshana of the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, who brings expertise in early Buddhist studies and Pāli textual traditions.

The afternoon session (3:00–5:00 PM) features locally trained Buddhist scholars Dr. Stephen Suen, Dr. Eliza Fok, and Dr. Mei Ling Fok (霍美玲博士), who will share insights drawn from their scholarship and engagement with Buddhist teachings and practice in the contemporary world.

Successful Zoom Seminar: Digital Resources for Buddhist Studies in Europe and Beyond

On 20 May 2026, the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT) successfully hosted a live Zoom seminar titled "Digital Resources for Buddhist Studies in Europe and Beyond: Language Tools, Textual Resources, and Research Platforms" (歐洲及全球佛教研究的數字資源：語言工具、文本資源與研究平台), delivered by Professor Tianran Wang, Assistant Professor at the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Chongqing University. Around 70 HSUHK students and scholars attended.

The talk introduced major digital resources for Buddhist Studies, beginning with key language tools for Sanskrit, Pāli, and Tibetan, before turning to textual platforms that provide access to Buddhist scriptures in multiple languages and enable cross-linguistic comparison. It concluded with broader research platforms that bring together large-scale textual corpora and manuscript collections.

Professor Wang, who received her PhD in Buddhist Studies from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, offered participants practical, research-oriented guidance on identifying and effectively engaging with the digital resources most relevant to their own work.

RCTBT Receives HK$280,000 under the Research Matching Grant Scheme for "Advancing Buddhist Translation Studies and Digital Buddhism"

The Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT) is pleased to announce that a sum of HK$280,000 has been allocated under the Research Matching Grant Scheme (RMGS) to support a new project entitled "Advancing Buddhist Translation Studies and Digital Buddhism".

Drawn from the School's matching grant share, this funding will be used to set up a dedicated project account to facilitate academic research at the RCTBT under the School of Translation and Foreign Languages, HSUHK.

The project will strengthen the Centre's ongoing work at the intersection of Buddhist Translation Studies and Digital Buddhism, supporting research activities, digital platform development, academic events, and scholarly publications. We are grateful for this continued institutional support, which enables the Centre to further its mission of bridging classical Buddhist scholarship with contemporary digital innovation.

RCTBT Director Invited to Speak at New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies on AI-Powered Buddhist Reading Platform

Dr. SIU Sai Yau, Director of the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT), was invited to deliver a talk at the New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies on 28 March 2026 as part of the "Chengming Roundtable" (誠明圓桌) themed "Historical Interweaving and Cultural Coexistence of Multiple Religions" (多元宗教的歷史交織與文化共生).

Dr. Siu's presentation, titled "A Development Framework for an AI-Powered Digital Reading Platform for Buddhist Translations" (人工智能時代佛教譯本數位閱讀平台之開發框架), introduced a new digital platform that enables users to read and explore the Western Paradise (Sukhāvatī) based on the Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra through AI-powered technologies.

The talk demonstrated how artificial intelligence can transform the way readers engage with classical Buddhist scriptures, offering immersive, multilingual, and interactive experiences that bridge ancient texts with contemporary digital learning.

Successful Zoom Seminar: The Interplay of Divine and Monarchical Power in Tangut Western Xia State Ideology

On 26 March 2026, the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT) successfully hosted a Zoom academic talk, chaired by RCTBT Director Dr. SIU Sai Yau. The seminar attracted approximately 70 overseas scholars and HSUHK members.

The talk, titled "The Interplay of Divine and Monarchical Power: The Politicization of Buddhism and Confucian-Buddhist Integration in Tangut Western Xia State Ideology" (神權與王權的交織：西夏統治意識形態中的佛教政治化與儒釋整合), was delivered by Dr. LAM Ho Yin (林皓賢博士), Assistant Professor at the School of Education and Psychology, Gratia Christian College.

The lecture explored how the Western Xia (白高大夏國) constructed its unique state governance ideology through the dual integration of religion (Buddhism) and secular education (Confucianism), examining the political transformation of Buddhism and the spatial-political construction of "Northern Wutai Mountain" (北五臺山). The session generated stimulating cross-disciplinary discussion among participants worldwide.

UGC Awards HK$800,000 Matching Grant for RCTBT Project on the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya in the Digital Age

We are delighted to announce that the University Grants Committee (UGC) has awarded a matching grant of HK$800,000, on a 1:1 matching ratio, under the New Round of its Research Matching Grant Scheme (1st cycle of 2025) for the RCTBT research project:

"The Abhidharmakośabhāṣya in the Digital Age: A New Translation and Philological Study of Chapter 1, 'Exposition on the Elements' (Dhātunirdeśa)".

This project will produce a new annotated translation and philological study of the first chapter of the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya (《阿毘達磨俱舍論》), a foundational Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma treatise, while harnessing digital tools to make this key text accessible to scholars and readers worldwide.

The award builds on the Centre's ongoing AKB translation project, guided by Venerable Professor K.L. Dhammajoti and supported by Dr. Stephen Suen and Dr. Eliza Fok, and marks a significant milestone in the Centre's mission to bring classical Buddhist scholarship into the digital age.

HSUHK students participating in Heart Sūtra calligraphy session at RCTBT

Fifth Heart Sūtra Calligraphy Session: Continuing the Tradition of Mindful Practice

On 2 March 2026, the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT) held its fifth Heart Sūtra calligraphy session as part of the TRA1224 module, "Living in Buddhism: In Dialogue with Bilingual Sūtras".

HSUHK undergraduate students from various disciplines participated in the mindful transcription of the Heart Sūtra—Master Xuanzang's Tang Dynasty translation—using traditional ink brushes. The contemplative act of brushwork helped students cultivate concentration, reduce stress, and develop a deeper appreciation of Buddhist heritage.

This recurring session continues to demonstrate how traditional contemplative practices can be meaningfully integrated into modern higher education, offering students a tangible connection to centuries-old Buddhist culture.

RCTBT Director's Work Featured in New UCL Press Monograph

We are delighted to share that Dr. SIU Sai Yau, Director of the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT), has contributed to the newly released volume Translation Studies before 'Translation Studies': Nothing happened?, published by UCL Press on 15 January 2026.

Dr. Siu authored Chapter 2, "Medieval China", featuring his work titled "Discerning Authenticity in Buddhist Scriptures: An Analysis of Sengyou's Approach to Pseudotranslation".

Edited by Professor Kathryn Batchelor and Dr. Iryna Odrekhivska, this open-access volume challenges established historical narratives by showcasing rich traditions of translation debate and theorizing from around the world—from Ancient Rome through Medieval China and India to twentieth-century contributions—prior to the formal establishment of the discipline in 1972.

RCTBT Hosts Buddhist Drawing Workshop for HSUHK Students

On 10 November, the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT) organized a Buddhist drawing workshop for 40 HSUHK undergraduate students from TRA1224, representing various departments across the university.

Using traditional Xuan paper (宣紙), students experienced the ancient Chinese practice of drawing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as a form of mindfulness meditation.

The workshop introduced the merits of different Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as core teachings of Mahāyāna Buddhism in China.

This hands-on session offered students a fresh learning experience, connecting them with traditional culture and contemplative practices that have been cherished for centuries.

Exploring Art as a Pathway to Mindfulness in Fourth Sūtra Workshop

Exploring the intersection of art and contemplation, our Centre held its fourth calligraphy session for the "Living in Buddhism" (TRA1224) course. Students used traditional artistic practices as a form of meditation, engaging in the mindful transcription of the Heart Sūtra and the contemplative practice of line drawing sacred figures. Both activities, rooted in Buddhist history, are designed to cultivate inner calm and improve concentration. This session offered a unique pathway for students to connect with Buddhist heritage, using the brush not just as a tool for art, but as an instrument for inner reflection.

As part of the TRA1224 module, Living in Buddhism: In Dialogue with Bilingual Sūtras, our Centre hosted the third Heart Sūtra calligraphy session, further enriching students' engagement with Buddhist traditions. Participants transcribed Xuanzang's Tang Dynasty translation of the Heart Sūtra using traditional ink brushes, deepening their mindfulness practice while enhancing focus and reducing stress. In addition, students explored line drawing of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, a meditative artistic practice historically used for mindfulness training. This hands-on experience allowed them to connect with Buddhist heritage on a deeper level, blending calligraphy and visual art as pathways to inner reflection and cultural appreciation.

Dr. Siu Sai Yau, the Director of RCTBT, delivered a talk titled "AI and Digital Buddhism: Prabhākaramitra and Beyond" for the GILT Research Centre Seminar Series on "Multilingualism and Multiculturalism" on 13 December at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. HSUHK Confers Honorary Appointments for Buddhist Studies

An appointment ceremony, marking the conclusion of the President's Dialogue Series, was held at HSUHK's Research Centre for Buddhist Texts and Buddhist Translation on November 6. During the ceremony, three distinguished scholars received their appointments from President Simon S.M. Ho (何順文校長).

The appointments included: Venerable Professor K. L. Dhammajoti (法光法師/教授) as Honorary Professor; Dr. Stephen Suen (孫漢明博士) as Honorary Advisor; and Dr. Eliza Fok (霍何綺華博士) as Honorary Advisor.

Cutting-Edge E-Learning Tools for Buddhist Studies: Exploring the Diamond Sūtra and Kumārajīva's Translation Journey

With the support of the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme, we have been launching several digital projects, including the development of two innovative e-learning platforms. "The Vajracchedikā Explorer" (梵漢《金剛經》學習平台) enables users to study both the Sanskrit and Chinese versions of the Diamond Sūtra, while "Kumārajīva's Translation Path: A 3D Exploration" (透過3D技術探索鳩摩羅什的譯經世界) leverages 3D technology to offer an immersive learning experience.

Mindful Brush Strokes: Embracing Tradition through Heart Sūtra Calligraphy at HSUHK

About the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts at HSUHK

What is RCTBT?

In the light of the growing popularity of Buddhism in the global community, the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (佛學文獻翻譯研究中心 RCTBT) was established under the School of Translation and Foreign Languages (STFL) with the approval of the Academic Board in early 2023. The Centre aims to promote Buddhist thought with the reinterpretation of Buddhist scriptures and writings across languages, by which we are in a better position to appreciate the critical role of sūtra translation in the dissemination of Buddhist thoughts and the (re-)shaping of Buddhism in China and other parts of the world.

Directed by Dr. SIU Sai Yau (蕭世友博士), the RCTBT is also a leading hub for Digital Humanities and Buddhist Studies in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. The Centre pioneers AI-powered translation tools, interactive digital platforms for Buddhist scriptures such as the Heart Sūtra and the Diamond Sūtra, digital gazetteers of Tang Chang'an Buddhist monasteries, spatial humanities platforms on Xuanzang's journey and translation career, 3D reconstructions of Buddhist architectural heritage, and computational approaches to the study of Sanskrit, Pāli, and Classical Chinese texts—bridging centuries-old Buddhist scholarship with contemporary digital innovation.

II. Vision/Objectives

The RCTBT, the first of its kind among tertiary institutions in the Greater Bay Area, will facilitate research on the translation of texts on Buddhist teachings and culture, including but not limited to traditional Buddhist literature (i.e., sūtrapiṭaka, vinayapiṭaka, and abhidharmapiṭaka), historical documents, and contemporary Buddhist writings. The RCTBT will focus on the following:

Develop infrastructure for Buddhist text translation research

1. To develop infrastructure for research on Buddhist texts and their translations in different languages

Familiarise scholars with Buddhist scripture translation trends

2. To familiarise academics, researchers, and students with key issues and trends in Buddhist scripture translation in the contemporary world

Platform for global experts in Buddhist scripture translation collaboration

3. To provide a platform for local and global experts in Buddhist scripture translation to foster collaboration and disseminate research findings

Innovative research and translation projects in Buddhist Studies

4. To identify and support innovative research or translation projects related to the ever-changing world of Buddhist Studies

III. Capability, Strength, and Positioning of the Centre

As a strategic move, the RCTBT will be beneficial to HSUHK and the community at large and serves as a pioneer attempt to promote Buddhist teachings through academic research and translation. More specifically, the Centre will

Revitalisation of Buddhist culture and global Buddhist community interaction
